Dear Runners: the results are coming give us just a little bit longer.

In the meantime, I have some of your clothes. Do not be embarrassed to let me know what you lost and where you live. Maybe we can meet or I can mail items to you. I honestly do not want your stuff but If you see me on the trail and I am wearing your favorite jacket, sentimental race shirt or expensive gloves do not get irritated, you were warned.

I noticed while I was riding around that the runners really did acknowledge the volunteers and thank them This is really appreciated. Some, probably more than half, have volunteered for this race for ten years, no small feat since most have to give up close to a full day, some several days. This is very different than passing out water at a 5K. I honestly think I could write a story about each and every volunteer. Some work all year long on the trail, keeping the maintenance up and helping to build new trails. Others man aide stations and plan weeks in advance, refuse to be reimbursed for their expenses even though the race can afford it and some take on key management jobs like handling all the data, all the start and finish operations, the website, and the entire picnic. Quite a few have emailed me with their plans for next year. Their enthusiasm and support is contagious.

The runners have been wonderful as well. After the first year or two, most runners tended to ‘get’ the race. There was little discussion about the distance, what would be at aide stations and what would happen if it got cold or wet. Instead, I see young ladies bragging about blood on their legs and now runners drinking Vodka at somewhere near 25 miles. I think half of you are probably closet adventure racers and just do not know it yet. You certainly have made it fun and rewarding to be involved with the race.

We have been a great group and have initiated a trail marathon in Montgomery County Maryland. Consider helping Harvey as he plans for the 2013 version.

Thanks much.

Punxsutawney Phil Says Spring Will Come Early

"Phil surveyed his surroundings and found no shadow, so an early spring it will be!"

No snow this year!

Jan 16, 2012: For the 2012 version of the race, we will use the new State trails below Riffleford Road as far as the Black Rock Mill. These trails are in excellent condition and will provide runners a real treat. Runners will also be running a longer course than in the past. The views and new trails are worth it.
